Everything Doesn’t Change at DBH
Design by Humans told us that everything changes on January 5th. It is now January 6th and I can’t see many changes. Today, for example, they have release a pretty cool large print t-shirt. Nothing new there.
Perhaps the new thing is that Design by Humans are having trouble spelling simple words. Or perhaps it’s the new t-shirt. Who knows. Really though, I expect there has been a slight delay and perhaps when I wake up tomorrow morning Design by Humans will be radically different. Anyway, the excitement is slowly building up.

DBH typo and new t-shirt message
Penrose Triangle T-Shirts
Filed under: Design by Humans, Funny Stuff, Threadless
The Penrose Triangle was named after mathematician Roger Penrose. I had probably seen the triangle a few times before but I certainly have seen plenty of Escher’s art in which this shape was popularized. This is a t-shirt blog rather than an art or math blog so I am of course going to talk about shirts. These shirts caught my attention a while back because they are all based on the Penrose Triangle. I had bookmarked them quite a while ago for mention but the recent submission of Trippy at Uneetee made me stop procrastinating. This design is the only one of the three designs in this post not yet available as a t-shirt. I imagine it is only a matter of time though.
I had seen this design when it was submitted to Threadless but it apparently wasn’t accepted there and the artist (kaloyster on Threadless) has now submitted it to Uneetee.
It seems that Threadless is not all that interested in the Penrose Triangle because another version of the Penrose Triangle by popular t-shirt designer, Tom Burns, called the Penrose Baby, was also not accepted. Perhaps it was because of the baby’s hairstyle which caused a minor controversy in the Threadless forums. Heeding the hairstyle advice of people in the forums, the baby was given a new do and submitted to Design by Humans.

The Penrose Baby gets a makeover
Unfortunately the new hairstyle wasn’t enough to get a win at Design by Humans either though. But for those of you who want to get their hands on one of these tees don’t worry. It is available at Loiter.
Last but certainly not least is Puzzled Putter by Glenn Jones which is my favorite of the three but doesn’t have quite the back story of the others. At least not that I know of. It is available on Glenn Jones own t-shirt store, which is called Glennz, and is currently on sale at only $13.95. Actually all tee are $13.95 from December 26-31st.
Design by Humans Sale
Now is a great opportunity to get your hands on some quality tees at bargain prices. T-Shirts like the two below, which have both been featured before at The T-Shirt Review, are on sale for as little as $10. I will be purchasing a couple.
DBH and Toys for Tots
The sale at Design by Humans may be over but there is another reason to buy some tees from there now. For every tee they sell they will donate $1 to Toys for Tots. Pretty cool.
They have also suggested that big changes are coming to Design by Humans and I wonder what they could be. Below is a blurb from their newsletter.
January 5th. Everything changes. Well, maybe not everything, but pretty darn close. Lets just say we have been listening to you in 2008 and have a few surprises in store for the new year.
Design by Humans Holiday Sale
I guess this is another sign that the American economy isn’t doing well. Sales before the holiday season. It is not the most exciting sale and many of the tees that you might wan to buy are more than $15. Below are a few of my favorite $15 t-shirts.
Back in Black T-Shirt Store
I came across this store (Back in Black T-Shirt Exhibit) yesterday and the thing that really caught my attention was the “Sponsored by Design by Humans” logo. Design by Humans seem to be expanding their business but it difficult for me to figure out what they are doing. Recently they announced a partnership with $9 T-Shirt store TeeFury and now I see they have something going with this store here which uses the Big Cartel shopping cart system.
Here is my theory. Design by Humans are doing well and they have some friends who are also in the t-shirt business and they want to help them out a bit and are thus lending their support. It would be a mutually beneficial relationship as DBH will produce the t-shirts but TeeFury and now Back in Black will provide more sales outlets. This is all conjecture of course.
Anyway this new store, Back in Black, has a nice selection of what seem to be one color designs each available on a selection of t-shirts. There is even a Jimiyo t-shirt there. Another cool thing about this store is that there is information about the artists too, so if you like their style you may be able to find their other artwork and t-shirts. A lot of the shirts have a similar style, like the Jimiyo skull shirt below, but there a few exceptions, one of which you can see below.
VonZipper T-Shirt Contest at DBH
To be honest I had never heard of VonZipper before this contest but of course Design by Humans have provided some info. They make sunglasses, goggles, belts and other accessories. Oh, and they even have a few tees. They are not bad but I imagine the crew at DBH will blow them away with their contributions to this contest. They also have a pretty kick-ass website.

They recommend checking out their website for inspiration and have provided logos that you can include in the design. You have to incorporate their logo or name in the design I believe. Below are a few tees from their site.
So that’s what they are celebrating
Earlier today I announced that Design by Humans were having a Celebration Sale and that I didn’t know what they were celebrating or what the link was to Tee Fury. Well, that’s impatience for you. An email from Design by Humans explains all. I have copied and pasted below for those who are curious.
DBH Announces Weekend SALE in Celebration of DBH/TeeFury.com Partnership!
DesignByHumans is excited to announce that it has just entered into an exclusive partnership with its friends over at TeeFury.com! For those of you who have not yet experienced “The Fury”, you’ll want to continue reading below!
TeeFury.com is a new t-shirt site that entered the online t-shirt arena less than 3 months ago and has been turning heads ever since. At TeeFury.com, one new limited-edition tee is made available every 24 hours for only $9. After the 24 hours is up, that shirt is gone forever. Also, artists keep full rights to their design and are paid $1 for every tee sold during the 24 hour period. Great for the artist and great for the t-shirt lover!
So why a DBH/TeeFury partnership? Well, lots of reasons:
- First, there is a ton of quality art out there that is not getting printed.
- Second, DBH feels that the “one shirt a day limited-edition concept” is novel.
- Third, as new artists emerge they may feel more comfortable “renting” their art to TeeFury for 24 hours as a testing ground for a potentially “bigger” payday on another site such as DBH.
- Fourth, DBH likes the idea of a lower priced everyday tee to compliment their current product offering!
In the end, if you are an artist, you will have the quality of DBH handling your work and the opportunity to participate on both sites. If you are a t-shirt addict, then you now have double the temptation!
Now let’s welcome TeeFury to the party!

DBH Celebration Sale
Design by Humans are having a celebration sale. I don’t know what they are celebrating and I don’t know why they are inviting Tee Fury to the party either. I am guessing there is a link between Tee Fury and Design by Humans as I am pretty sure that this is not the first time Tee Fury was mentioned on Design by Humans. Anyway DBH are selling their tees, at least some of them, for as little as $15. Tee Fury are still charging $9 as far as I know. If you are into Halloween below is a sweet tee from DBH that can be worn all through the year as well. This sale ends on Sunday so don’t delay.
Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I had some bandwidth issues and have moved this site to another host, I don’t think I will have that problem here. These have been two quick posts but I do have more juicy stuff coming soon so stay tuned.
Collision Theory Rising
AJ Dimarucot aka Collision Theory is doing very well for himself recently. You may notice the similarity of this image and the previous image and the reason is that Collision Theory had a hand in that one too collaborating with Jimiyo. He was also the winner of Design by Humans‘ DBH10K just last week. This great tee is his eighth win at Design by Humans so if you are more into wolves than bears you are in luck.
